Hockey pool rules

Most hockey pool arguments come from rules nobody wrote down. Here is a plain rules sheet for each common format. Copy it into your invite, change what you like, and settle it before the puck drops.

Rules every pool should state

  • Deadline: when picks lock (usually the first playoff game).
  • Scoring: points per round, goal, assist, win, shutout.
  • Ties: what breaks them, and whether tied entries split a prize.
  • Changes: whether picks or rosters can change after the deadline (usually no).
  • Entry and prizes: if there is an entry fee, who holds it and when it's paid out. Keep it among people who know each other, and check your workplace policy and local rules.

Bracket pool rules

  1. Pick the winner of all 15 series before the first game.
  2. Correct winners score 1, 2, 4 and 8 points by round. Calling the number of games adds 1.
  3. Ties are broken by the number of correct series, then shared.

Pick'em pool rules

  1. Pick a winner for each game before it starts. Missed games score zero.
  2. One point per correct pick. Overtime and shootout wins count as wins.
  3. Ties share the rank.

Salary cap pool rules

  1. Choose 6 forwards, 4 defence and 2 goalies whose prices total $60M or less.
  2. Rosters lock at the first playoff game. No trades or replacements.
  3. Goals and assists score 1 point each. Goalie wins and shutouts score 2 each.
  4. Injured or eliminated players stay on your roster and simply stop scoring.

Draft pool rules

  1. Snake order (1→N, then N→1), drawn at random before the draft.
  2. Each team drafts 6 forwards, 4 defence and 2 goalies. A player can only be drafted once.
  3. If you're not there for your turn, the commissioner picks for you (or takes the best available).
  4. Same scoring as the salary cap pool. No trades or pickups after the draft.

Questions

Do overtime goals count?

Yes. Playoff games have no shootout, so every goal and assist, including in overtime, counts.

Does a goalie get the win if he was pulled?

The win goes to the goalie of record. We give it to the winning team's goalie who played the most minutes.
